SIMPLE PITTA BREADS
These pitta breads cook in seconds. Watch them puff up fast in the wood burning oven! They are super easy to make and taste amazing. And you can use any left overs for making yummy sandwiches with ham, cheese or whatever else tickles your fancy. Our kids absolutely love them!
This recipe makes 12 – 14 pitta breads
INGREDIENTS:
500g Organic strong white bread flour or 00 flour
1 tsp Himalayan pink salt
350ml Warm water
15g Fresh yeast
DIRECTIONS:
In a large bowl sift the flour and add the salt. Stir the fresh yeast into the warm water and pour it over the flour. Mix together until it forms soft dough. Knead the dough on a clean surface for about 10 min and then place it back into the bowl, cover with cling film and let it rest for at least an hour. The dough should double in size.
Once the dough has risen, take it out of the bowl – split it into 12 or 14 little pieces. Roll each one into an oval shape approx. 12-14cm in size. Line them up on floured work surface, cover and leave for another half hour and then they are ready to cook. If you are in a hurry though you can skip this bit and get them straight in. They will still taste fab – I have tried both ways!
OVEN COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:
Built up the fire in the oven until it reaches about 350 degrees C. It will take you approx. an hour to do this. Once you have set the correct temperature close the oven door to retain the heat while you are getting your pitta breads ready.
Use the oven peel with plenty of flour on it and line up your pitta breads. Let them all rest on the oven floor. There is no need to close the oven door because all is cooked fast. Enjoy seeing them all bake in 90 – 120 seconds. Don’t overcook as they will become too crispy.
Once the pitta breads are out of the oven, place them in a basket and cover with a kitchen towel or clean dish cloth. Voila, they are ready to eat!
